| Deciding which type of collaboration best
suits your research aims is not always easy; two different routes may work
equally well. Dictating factors are generally the nature of the research
(is it more applied or speculative?), what timescales you are working to,
the desired degree of ownership of intellectual property and recruitment
needs. For example, projects funded wholly by grants from public
bodies tend to be of three years duration and require results to be in
the public domain. Contract research is geared to meeting deliverables
within fixed, and generally shorter, timescales and postgraduate sponsorship
and The Teaching Company Scheme provide trained engineers for recruitment
to key R & D positions.
