Industrial Liaison in the School

Placement and sponsorship

We actively encourage and assist our students to find summer and year out placements and sponsorship.  The benefits to the employer are well known ("road tested" graduates, flexible labour, "word of mouth" advertising).  The year out can be taken before coming to University, after the second year or after the third year for four-year courses.  A Diploma of Industrial Studies (DIS) is an optional qualification which can be obtained by students who successfully complete a year in industry by submitting a log book and report and giving a presentation on the year.  Year out student salaries range from about £9 - 16Kpa.  A bursary of £1,000 - 3,000 per academic year for the rest of their time at university is usually used to retain placement students (this is generally known as final year sponsorship).

Some of the companies who currently sponsor or place our students are Avery Berkel, BBC, BT, BP Chemicals, British Airways, Control Techniques Plc, DESG, De La Rue Cash Systems, Ford Motor Company, GCHQ, GEC Alsthom T & D Protection and Control Ltd, GEC Alsthom T & D Transformers Ltd, LSI Logic Europe Ltd, National Gric Company Plc,  GEC-Marconi Communications Ltd, Nokia, Nortel, Orange, Racal-Thorn, Roke Manor Research Ltd.
