Directions on how to find my office at the University of Birmingham

My office can be found at the north east end of the main campus of the University of Birmingham (Room 433, Gisbert Kapp Building, Pritchatts Road). The main university campus is located at Edgbaston, 2 1/2 miles southwest of Birmingham city centre. Birmingham is a modern European City, located in the heart of England. You can reach the city by air, train, bus/coach or car.

By Air

The closest airport to the city is Birmingham International Airport (BHX). There are direct flights to Birmingham from major UK, European and North American city  destinations. On arrival to BHX one can reach the city and the university by taxi, bus, or rail (see below). There is a dedicated and frequent (every 30 minutes) bus service, the Airbus, which connects Birmingham International Airport with various hotels and locations of the city: Chamberlain Park Hotel, Digbeth Coach Station, Hotel Ibis, Forte Posthouse, Navigation Street (for the Burlington Hotel), International Convention Centre, National Indoor Arena, City Inn, Novotel, Chamberlain Tower, Symphony Hall, Hyatt ( and Holiday Inn Crown Plaza), Copthorne Hotel, NEC. Other convenient airports for international flight connections include London Heathrow (LHX) and London Gatwick (LGW), however these airports are further to the south of England and you need to travel for 2-3 hours by coach, train or car to reach Birmingham.

By Train

Birmingham city can be reached by rail (plan your journey online) through inter-city services from all major rail connections in the UK. The main railway station for Birmingham is New Street. Upon arrival to New Street you need to get the local CENTRO (West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive) rail connection to Longbridge/Redditch for the University Station.  There are frequent trains every 15 minutes. The University Station is located near the West Gate of the campus. When you come out the station, turn to your left at University Road West. As you stroll down the hill, you see Faraday's sculpture on your right hand side and the newly developed West campus buildings. At the end of the road you reach the junction to the Ring road. You will see the Munrow Sports Centre on your left hand side. Follow the ring road to the left, go under the Muirhead Tower, until you see on your left the Gisbert Kapp Building (see point 48 on  campus map). The building can be easily recognised by the big satellite dish on its top. Cross over Pritchatts road, go through the lower car park area barriers and walk up the steps to the Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering reception area. We have a very helpful receptionist that can direct you to my office, which is located in section B4 of the fourth floor of the building. My office is in the same corridor as CETADL (Centre for Educational Technology and Distance Learning) and NSL (Nortel Student Laboratory), so you can follow the signs to these places, as well.

By Coach or Bus

There are frequent express coach services to Birmingham from many UK cities and major airports. The main long-distance coach station is Digbeth, in the City Centre. You can find out more about journeys, fares and services by coach at www.gobycoach.com

There are also frequent bus services to the main University campus from various locations in Birmingham. Numbers 61, 62 and 63 travel from Corporation Street to the University. These buses, together with services  83, 84 and 85, pass by Bristol Road and stop near the University's South Gate and Edgbaston Park Road. Numbers 21 (Birmingham-Bartley Green) and 44/S/T/B (Birmingham/Northfield-Longbridge) are buses that go around the University Rail Station/QE Hospital (see instructions above) and stop outside the Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering building (bus stops along Pritchatts Road). For more up to date information on routes and maps check Travel West Midlands.

By Car

An extract and a map from the University's directions on how to approach the main campus by car:

"Approaching from the NW or SE along the M6, leave at Junction 6 (signposted Birmingham Central) to join the A38 (M). At the end of the motorway keep to the right, go over a flyover, then through three underpasses to join the A38 Bristol Road. The University is on your right two and a half miles from the City centre.

Approaching from the M42 North, leave at Junction 8 to join the M6 northbound and follow the instructions above.

Approaching from the SW, leave the M5 at Junction 4 (signposted Birmingham SW) to join the A38. The University is on the left of the A38 Bristol Road approximately eight miles from the motorway.

The approach to the University through the southern suburbs can be confusing. From the M40, it is easier to turn south on the M42 and leave at Junction 1, heading north on the A38 Bristol Road. The University is approximately eight miles from the motorway."

Parking might be a bit difficult if you have not received a park permit, in advance, from me. Check the car park guide for the main campus.

When on Campus

On arrival to the main campus locate the north east end and you will identify the Gisbert Kapp Building (see point 48 on  campus map).
