The AmbiTent

The AmbiTent is a proposed experimentation space where Ambient Technologies can be manipulated and observed in use. The Tent will consist of the ability to locate the position of the occupier and will be equipped with various Ambient appliances simulated by simple bulbs / LEDs to indicate on/off or variable situations. The user within the tent will wear the SensVest developed for the Lab of Tomorrow EU [IST-2000-50576] project to provide data about the user; heart rate, body motion, and body temperature. The SensVest will enable the study of interaction with every day objects, to ascertain the occupiers’ activity.

The first incarnation will have sensors hard wired in position while future, and a more realistic situation would have each real appliance wirelessly connected to the room.

Levels of intelligence and intelligence location
The AmbiTent will be given various levels of intelligence both by using a computer system for sensing thresholds and pattern recognition or modelling and human methods, such as the Wizard of Oz method.
In this way experiments can be constructed to see where the intelligence is needed; in the hands of the occupier or in the room itself. What levels of intelligence are required, and how much appliance / occupier data is required for Ambient Technology to function with a degree of usefulness.
