Eurowearable '03 at the University of Birmingham, 4th & 5th September 2003

The Lab of Tomorrow Project

The Lab of Tomorrow project is a European project primarily concerned with capturing sensor data from the local environment, for transmission to some control computer or computers. This will then be used for analysis during Physics classes, to learn about conservation of momentum, energy, to name but a few. The sensors being developed are as follows: an accelerometer mounted in a football to detect acceleration, spin, and hopefully speed and flight path. A twin camera system for position location of the football while in play; and the part Birmingham is working on, a sensor shirt (SensVest), which records leg, arm, and body acceleration, heart rate, body temperature, ECG information.

The shirt also has good prospects for use in the fields of sports, sport science, and health care monitoring. It will also be used as a form of wearable interface for wearable and distributed computer systems.

As noted above Birminghams involment is in development of the SensVest.
