Electromagnetic and Electromechanical Devices
The research on the electromagnetics includes actuation devices, machines and specialised transformers: for example, a short-stroke, high-force linear actuator has recently been designed as part of a high-performance aircraft hydraulic system, and a novel brushless DC machine system has been devised with special fault tolerant features.
The transformer research includes new highly efficient structures for MHz power supplies and the application of high temperature superconductors fault current limiting devices. New toroidal structures have been devised for fault current limiters in which the secondary winding is formed by a stack of interleaved superconducting discs. The advantage of the new structure is that very low leakage fields impinge on the superconducting discs.
