Alan Yates is a support technician currently working for the Communications Research Group in the School of Electrical Electronic & Computer Engineering which is now part of the " College of Engineering & Physical Sciences ".

Before I came to work at Birmingham University , I worked in industry for a company called " Eddystone Radio Ltd " for 10 years ( 1978 - 1987) during which I studied for & gained an HNC in Electronic Servicing whilst working on a range of radio receivers & MF , HF & VHF transmitting equipment up to 4 kW output along with the relevant instrumentation , I also studied for and gained my Amateur Radio Transmitting Licence .

Before joining the research center ( in 1992 ),I was previously involved with supporting the teaching labs & maintaining the wide range of instuments & equipment used , as well as assisting the Undergraduate students in practical aspects of their " Final Year Projects " ( 1987 - 1992 ).I continue to assist the undergraduate students with their projects but now specialise in the Radio & Acoustics type projects .

My Undergraduate and Post Graduate Taught course support times are here" Support For Taught Course Students " and any changes are locally displayed on my office door.

My hobbies include "Amateur Radio " for which I have held a transmitting licence since 1978 my callsign is G8RAO, I prefer to construct & operate on the VHF bands above 50 MHz ,I am a member of the South Birmingham Radio Society. I am also interested in " Preserved Railways " being mainly an " armchair member " of the Severn Valley Railway although I did get involved with the railway's LNER Coach Fund by contributing to this group's project to restore a coach to running order ,the link below takes you to a copy of an article published in the SVR's magazine " SVR News " I continue to support this group as and when time & material permit .
