The presence of a geological fault is implied by the discontinuous nature of the horizons (the black and white stripes caused by the sedimentary layering of the rocks).
The semblance measure provides a quantatitive measure of the localised continuity of an horizon. The figure on the left gives an equivalent semblance map for the 2D seismic slice shown above.
The semblance map is post-prossessed, thresholded and sub-sampled to give a set of seed points (see right).
